While studying at Central Saint Martins in 2019 we were briefed to create a propaganda protest poster on our topic of choice. I chose to create a protest poster against The Human Life Protection Act, also known as House Bill 314 (HB 314) and the Alabama abortion ban. This bill was set to impose a near-total ban on abortion in the state starting in November 2019, regardless of situation or circumstance. The original design for 'My Body Not Yours' was inspired by the students at Central Saint Martins and an editorial zine was created while studying at Chelsea College of Art.
At Chelsea College of Art, I took the design of the protest poster and created a zine entitled 'The My Body Zine'. Several writers contributed articles regarding their personal experiences which body related issues, ranging from dating with a disability to contraception to mental health issues. The idea was to create a space that was a 'go to' for topics regarding women's mental, physical and sexual health. The illustrations were designed to be inviting and not confrontational, allowing the reader to not feel intimidated by serious topics - the idea was not to trivialise these topics but make them more accessible and common place.
Using procreate, I designed recurring patterns and motifs that are present throughout the zine. These illustrations are also visible on the instagram and website page. Starting as a concept protest poster, The My Body Campaign grew into a social media information platform and website blog accessible for all people, with memorisable and distinctive icons and motifs.
